On Thursday, 119 members of the Seimas voted in favor of such amendments to the Inland Waterways Transportation Code, one abstained.

From June Monday to Friday from 00:00 to 18:00. Employees of the Klaipėda municipality, its controlled companies and other companies registered in Neringa and their transport will be admitted to the ferry first.

People with disabilities and their cars, special service cars, as well as people and their vehicles who have declared their place of residence in Neringa and Smiltyne will be admitted to the ferry 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Plus, Curonian Spit Forest Enterprise employees and cars will be able to get up without queuing.

The head of the Audit Committee, Zigmantas Balčytis, assured that now the relocation procedure will be much clearer.

“This will facilitate the work of all the institutions and organizations they serve, especially Neringa,” he said.

According to Antanas Vinkus, former mayor of Neringa, who belongs to the “peasant” faction, the current regime complicates the lives of residents and employees of Neringa and Smiltynė, creating many inconveniences and delays for them and their families.

People who can get up for free now also have no preference for getting on the ferry.

In 2019, the Smiltynės perkėla company decided not to apply the priority procedure for access to the ferry, as this procedure was not regulated by legal acts.

The then Minister of Transport and Communications, Rokas Masiulis, claimed that the right to travel for free had been abused because many people obtained such permits illegally.
