The city council of Neringa raised this Thursday the tax on passenger cars from 5 to 10 euros in spring and autumn, at the same time extending the time in which higher rates are applied to buses and caravans. It will be more expensive to enter from May 1 to 31 and from September 16 to October 30.

Previously, higher than off-season rates were in effect from June 1-19 and August 21-31.

From November 1 to April 31, the same entry fee of EUR 5 will apply to passenger cars.

According to the Council decision, a car tax of EUR 30 will continue to apply during the summer, but will apply for a longer period, from June 1 to September 15 (previously June 20 to August 20) .

A fee of € 15-30, depending on the season, is also set for cars towing a caravan, thus aligning the fee with the toll for self-propelled mobile homes.

The municipality notes that the car tax is introduced when it is perceived that more and more tourists arrive at the complex out of season.

“So we are trying to reduce those flows and send a message that we are trying to reach Neringa in all other ways, except by cars. And not by quads,” Darius Jasaitis, mayor of Neringa municipality, told BNS.

According to him, the tax on ATVs is introduced to control the use of these vehicles and to register them, it will apply to both arrivals and locals.

“We have seen that life is improving and not only are new beauties emerging from yachts, but also other techniques, so we had to take those measures in the council so that the ministry did not have to take them. I think I did it. Because there are many other places in Lithuania where you can ride an ATV, ”said the mayor of BNS.

According to the mayor, at present the municipality does not know how many all-terrain vehicles there are in the municipality, since some of them are registered, such as agricultural machinery, or are not registered at all, so they would like to create a registry of they.

However, D. Jasaitis admitted that in Neringa “we would not survive without the local quads”, because they are often used for rescues or other jobs where there is no access by car. Therefore, the municipality intends to establish separate rules for its use, and residents could apply for this tax relief in exchange for registering a quad.

“When the time comes to do a circulation suitability test, take it to repair or somewhere, or you will have to pay 500 euros when you return, or contact the municipal administration, which I think will put in place some arrangements or an agreement with the National Owner of the park, he will possibly always have to have navigation, perhaps hunters, when going to the forest, inform the forester, inform about the objective ”, he said.

People with reduced mobility who have the SV mark on their vehicle registration certificates to indicate that the car is driven manually will also be exempt from the local toll. The purpose of this amendment is to clearly identify the special purpose vehicle so that tellers at the checkpoint have no doubts about the local toll exemption.
