Nausėda’s response to Šimonyte is called a “political turning point”: the president lies

Meanwhile, Matas Maldeikis, a member of the National Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) faction, describes the president’s response as a “political puzzle” without foundation in any legal argument and does not rule out a return to the law registered in the Seimas. .

“The letter is very elegant, I would call it a ‘political turning point’, which again is not a right, but a certain political position that speaks again of relying on tradition,” Maldeikis told Eltai.

The politician is convinced that the president’s arguments that it is not necessary to change the political tradition in Lithuania are unfounded. According to M. Maldeikis, G. Nausėda herself does not follow the previously valid tradition, when prime ministers and presidents agreed to represent the state in EVS.

“I want to emphasize one thing: the tradition in Lithuanian politics when talking about EVS was different for both Dalia Grybauskaitė and previous presidents. She would sit down with the prime ministers and agree, saying that one or the other politician would go depending on the agenda. This has been confirmed by former prime ministers, both Butkevičius and Mr. Skvernelis. Therefore, the position of the Presidency that this is a tradition is a lie ”, assured the parliamentarian.

E. Gentvilas expressed concern about Lithuania’s image abroad during the ongoing conflict over EVS

Meanwhile, the liberal E. Gentvilas affirms that the very question of raising the representation of Lithuania in the EVS determined the conflict between the institutions of the Presidency and the Prime Minister.

“I think the issue was threatened by an inter-institutional conflict, and it has happened,” Genvil told Eltai.

However, the liberal was pleased that after the Ryanair plane crash-landing in Minsk, both the president and the prime minister were able to focus and at least represent a united Lithuanian position on this issue.

“Okay, we have seen that the issue of kidnapping in Belarus has been concentrated, everything is in order, in a bagpipe, but otherwise we want a more cohesive work,” said the major of the Liberal Group.

However, he expressed concern that the introduction of this conflict in the international media could damage Lithuania’s image abroad.

“Another thing, issues of Lithuania’s reputation. We once scoffed when it was shown that Polish leaders were pushing for representation in the EVS, they didn’t want that to happen to Lithuania,” said the liberal.

The elder of the LRLS faction believes that the conservatives did not need to raise the issue of EVS at all, as a political tradition and a certain order had already formed regarding the representation of Lithuania, and the initiative of the conservative M. Maldeikis was only burning passions.

“It just came to our knowledge then. And with different presidents and with different prime ministers, political parties. It seems to me that it was not necessary for Maldeikis to start heating up these passions. It happened as it happened, I said my skeptical attitude from day one and now I believe that we have been wrong ”, assured E. Gentvilas.

M. Maldeikis does not rule out the possibility of returning to the law registered in the Seimas

MP Maldeikis registered a separate law governing state representation in the EVS in the spring session, but the Conservatives temporarily withdrew from the initiative, arguing that the committee’s position was sufficient to resolve the situation. The initiator of the project himself points out that specific actions will be discussed with the entire TS-LKD faction, but does not rule out that if the president and prime minister do not reach an agreement before the next meeting of the EVS in June, M. Maldeikis will return to this project. “I want a legal path, hoping, hoping that this can still be solved by sitting, legally, wonderfully (…) I think this is one of the most realistic ways to regulate legally, as has happened in other countries. There are basically two ways: the Constitutional Court or a legal act ”, said the Conservative.

The politician points out that he has always wanted to involve the president in legal and political debates by raising the issue of EVS, but the head of the country, according to the conservative, does not base his position on legal arguments.

“I always wanted an argumentative language and I tried to involve the presidential institution in the political and legal debate about it.” These are not legal and political arguments ”, assured M. Maldeikis.

ELTA recalls that on Wednesday, President G. Nausėda confirmed that he had written to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte in a letter in which the Head of Government proposed to change the current procedure for representing Lithuania in the EVS. However, the president ignored the prime minister’s call to allow the head of government to travel to EVS meetings, depending on the topics discussed at EU summits.

A few weeks ago, the Head of Government I. Šimonytė stated that she had written a letter to G. Nausėda declaring her position on the issue of the representation of Lithuania in the EVS, which had broken out between the Presidency and the Conservatives. As stated by the Prime Minister at that time, her position on the representation of Lithuania, of which she also informed the President, is such that before each EU summit it would be possible to decide who would represent the country, taking into account the content of the questions. .

Recently, the question of whether the president should continue to represent EVS has sparked considerable debate between the Presidency and some conservative representatives. The latter argue that the EVS should also involve the Prime Minister, since they say that issues that are the prerogatives of the Government are also addressed there. So far, the presidency has stated that it sees no reason to change the current order, when Lithuania is represented in the EVS only by the president.
