“Cooperation between Lithuania and Poland dates back centuries. We are natural allies in security and defense. Only through joint efforts can we guarantee security in the region,” G. Nausėda said in a press release issued after the meeting.

The presidents of Lithuania and Poland visited the headquarters of the Polish Special Forces Component (POLSOCOM).

They discussed the security situation in the region and emerging challenges to regional stability, including increased flows of illegal immigrants and the unpredictable regime in Belarus, Russia’s aggressive policy towards neighboring countries, according to the report.

The meeting also discussed the results of the NATO summit, the response to exercise Zapad 2021, energy and cyber security.

According to the Presidency, G. Nausėda stressed the need to immediately address the problem of strengthening the eastern border of the EU by effectively preventing illegal immigration flows from Belarus.

“We will not allow the Belarusian regime to use immigrants as a political weapon,” said the Lithuanian president.

Mr. Nausėda and Mr. Duda also discussed relations with the Eastern Partnership countries, paying particular attention to Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.

They agreed that the EU must support Ukrainians on this path and offer a clear European perspective.

Another 57 migrants were detained

From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, border guards, according to preliminary data, detained 57 migrants from Belarus who crossed the border illegally, reports the State Border Guard Service.

More than half of them were captured by Aleksandras Barauskas firebreak agents on the Varėna district border.

For the fifth day in a row, the number of migrants crossing the border illegally from Belarus did not exceed 100.

This year, a total of 1,634 illegal immigrants were detained on the border with Belarus.

Lithuanian officials say the surge in migration flows is a hybrid attack organized by the Belarusian regime. Minsk claims that immigrants in Belarus are no longer deterred by EU sanctions.

The Lithuanian government has declared an emergency situation.
