During his visit to Krakow on Sunday, G. Nausėda discussed security issues with Polish President Andrzej Duda.
“Mr. President and I had the opportunity to discuss the geopolitical situation. I note with great satisfaction that we have no fundamental differences of opinion on issues that are critical today, relevant to our present and future.
Undoubtedly, we all see perfectly what is happening in the East, what are the actions of Russia, what political processes are taking place in Belarus since last year. The secondary consequences of these processes are currently being experienced in Lithuania, experiencing significant migratory pressures. Every day, illegal immigrants from various countries cross our border, ”G. Nausėda said at a press conference on Sunday.
Lithuania is asking for Polish help at the border, both in human resources and technical solutions.
“I asked the president to assess our need, both in terms of human resources and in terms of technical means, so that we can defend the external border of the entire European Union, which is not secure, not Lithuania.
We must do everything we can to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. The president promised to evaluate the possibilities and respond to the request as soon as possible, “assured G. Nausėda.
Hope to help
Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Sunday that he hoped his country would provide support to Lithuania in dealing with the influx of illegal immigrants from Belarus.
“I hope that in the next few days, and maybe even hours, the matter will be resolved and we can provide that assistance,” A. Duda said at a joint press conference with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda in Krakow.
According to him, the Polish border guards have already worked in other European Union (EU) countries and outside the Community, which would not be a new experience for them.
According to A. Duda, Poland could contribute to the protection of the Lithuanian border with Belarus by coordinating the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex.
Another 57 migrants were detained
From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, border guards, according to preliminary data, detained 57 migrants from Belarus who crossed the border illegally, reports the State Border Guard Service.
More than half of them were captured by Aleksandras Barauskas firebreak agents on the Varėna district border.
For the fifth day in a row, the number of migrants crossing the border illegally from Belarus did not exceed 100.
Lithuanian officials say the surge in migration flows is a hybrid attack organized by the Belarusian regime. Minsk claims that immigrants in Belarus are no longer deterred by EU sanctions.
With the recent significant increase in illegal migration from Belarus, the government has declared a state of emergency.
The new arrivals are housed in premises provided by border municipalities, as well as in tents, and the government is looking for ways to effectively expel migrants whose asylum claims are unfounded.
A total of 1,634 migrants were detained at the border with Belarus this year, significantly more than last year. Many of them are from the Middle East and Africa.
