“I discussed this issue and this aspect while talking to the esteemed Aušrine Armonaitė, I said that sometimes we would like to simplify and schematize life a bit, put politicians on certain shelves and say: wow, this is from the 19th century, this from the 20th century … I am a 21st century person and I will solve this problem with the principles of a 21st century person, “G. Nausėda told reporters on Monday after a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary parties.

The president emphasized that he looked forward to the future activity of the parliament on these issues and promised to express his opinion during the discussion at the Seimas.

“I believe that Seimas will be active in this area and I urge you to do so in every way, because that is your promise to the voters, that is the expectation of the voters. Therefore, any party worth its salt must satisfy the expectations of the electorate. First, I look forward to an in-depth discussion on this issue in Seimas himself, and then depending on what is specifically proposed, I will certainly decide for myself. In any case, I hope my position will also express himself during the discussion of these laws, ”said the head of state.

Conservatives who have been in the opposition so far won Sunday’s elections with 50 seats and began talks on a ruling center-right coalition with the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party. These forces would have a fragile majority of 74 members in the Seimas. The Conservatives propose Ingrid Šimonytė as Prime Minister and invite other parties to meet as well.

On Monday, the president of the Freedom Party Aušrinė Armonaitė reaffirmed that she would seek to include in the coalition agreement a referendum on the original spelling of non-Lithuanian surnames in passports, the decriminalization of soft drugs and the legalization of partners from the same sex.
