Nagorno-Karabakh: more than half of Stepanakert residents have returned home

Residents of communities now under the control of the Azerbaijani forces are said to be also arriving in Stepanakert. According to the mayor, local authorities rent them hotels, houses and apartments.

Sarkisian says the presence of Russian peacekeepers in general makes the population feel calmer and safer.

The mayor added that half of Stepanakert’s buildings, including civil infrastructure, were damaged during the shootings.

November 9 Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian signed a joint declaration on the cessation of hostilities in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Under the peace agreement, Armenia has agreed to hand over control of certain areas to Azerbaijan.
