“We learned about the craters in 2013, when a photo of a large pit of unclear origin was obtained in the Yamal Frost. The pit looked like a very unusual tundra, quite flat and smooth. Therefore, the first idea that stuck in my head was the technogenic origin. We thought it was likely that some kind of emergency situation or something had fallen, maybe even an object from space, ”the scientist told Nauka TV.
He explained that permafrost lands have been observed for nearly 30 years and no such images have existed until now. Only now have scientists realized that underground deposits of methane gas have formed near the earth’s surface.
Wells are formed due to strong pressure when accumulations of methane gas explode near the surface.
It is not dangerous, but it is quite difficult to predict.
Formations formed in remote areas do not yet pose a threat to settlements. However, no one can predict where other “holes” will open in this region.
According to the expert, the craters are formed in more remote areas, but one of them is located 3.5 kilometers from the gas pipeline, and the other, a few kilometers from the railroad. So there is a threat to those around you. If they become more prevalent in the future, it will pose a significant threat to communications networks and infrastructure, especially Siberian gas production.
