As the architect Aurimas Baužys said in the presentation, the main proposal is the center of the famous astronomer FW Argelander, which would include other proposals.

“It will be like a fusion, a variant that encompasses everything and at the same time honors that historical personality that becomes the central idea of this building,” said the architect.

This center would present the idea of the post office as an important navigational and technological object, while also presenting the personality of a famous astronomer.

This center would present diverse technologies, combine art and science, as well as combine history and modern technologies.

The center is expected to be visited by schoolchildren and students, will attract artists and academics, as well as residents and guests of the city.

Mindaugas Kulbokas, head of Newsec’s research and analysis group, pointed out that the investment required for this building is not directly amortized in any of the scenarios, but the FW Argelander Center would bring the greatest benefits to the community and the revitalization of the postal area. .

According to the calculations of the feasibility study, the installation of this center would cost 7.3 million. It would be cheaper than the art residency option, but more expensive than the communications center.

According to the study authors, the three proposals include similar functions, but receive different attention in projects.

Until the fall of 2019, the post office operated in a neo-Gothic building in the center of the port city, built in the 19th century. Now the building is empty.

Lietuvos Paštas tried to sell it at auction, but it was decided that the central post offices of Kaunas and Klaipėda should belong to the state due to their architectural-cultural value. This group of buildings is expected to be recognized as a cultural monument.

A feasibility study for the Kaunas Central Post Office is scheduled to be presented next week.

FW Argelander was born in Klaipeda, later Mėmelis. Near the post office there was once a house where an astronomer lived, on which there is a commemorative plaque dedicated to him.
