The Istanbul Convention, riddled with rumors and myths, has long aroused passions, but as the rulers hinted that it could be ratified this spring, a storm of emotion and debate grows every day.
“Satan has learned even on a political level, to distort human nature, when perverts teach through LRT, I can say quite clearly, perverts, LGBT girls teach us who we are, that children are no longer children, men are not men, girls are not girls, women are not women, but the end knows what, ”says chaplain Paulius Vaineikis.
This chaplain responded to a children’s television program about sexual minorities as follows:
“Homosexuality, well, there is nothing special about it, it is not underestimated to look at it, it is not a mysterious or unnatural part of human nature.”
Priest Algirdas Toliatas also publicly called for a petition against the Istanbul Convention to be signed, sparking a wave of radical criticism and hatred of LGBT rights defenders. The activists explain that the clergy should not interfere in this at all.
“There is such an agreement that you make and you are allowed to do what is important to you within the limits of religious freedom, but civil life is left in the hands of civilians. I really like the phrase of the Gospel itself in this regard: what is Caesar, for Caesar, what is God, for God ”, says Jūratė Juškaitė, representative of the Center for Human Rights.
The chairman of the Human Rights Committee, who calls himself a professional homosexual, Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius, even shared a cartoon depicting a priest who condemns a homosexual man, but at the same time satisfies him orally. True, he later apologized for it.
And the Istanbul Convention itself is really only for the protection of women who are victims of violence, it establishes what measures States must take. However, his opponents are more terrified of the concept of gender used in the Convention.
“Gender” refers to the socially formed roles, behaviors, activities, and traits that a particular society classifies as appropriate for women and men.
It is a concept of gender that is absolutely vague, related to a person’s own sense of how they feel, what roles they have.
And sexual minorities actually have up to a few dozen different concepts that describe their gender. Because some do not feel like men or women. However, the representative of the center for human rights in favor of the convention has another explanation of what this definition means.
“Men who abuse or disrespect women are sexually harassed because they weren’t born that way and because their behavior can be corrected. This violent and negative behavior is not determined by our biology, but by our cultural and social norms, which justify it, ”says Jūratė Juškaitė, representative of the Center for Human Rights.
Opponents of the convention make theoretical assumptions that the concept of “gender” can bring legal chaos.
“For example, in sports, men can change their gender to female and participate in female competitions with biological sex, assuming the social identity of a woman, they can participate in matches and women’s sports are destroyed,” said Audrius Globys, President of the Free Society Institute.
According to Agnė Širinskienė, after the approval of the convention, it would be mandatory to talk about social gender for children, because it also provides for compulsory education. According to her, if something is missing in Lithuania, it can be legalized separately, without any concept of social gender.
“If we haven’t taken the essential steps in 8 years, how much longer will we continue, and how will we handle those little things and where will it all go? From our point of view, we were 8 years old, time to act. It is time to ratify, to engage with the international community, which means that Lithuania will be monitored, ”says J. Juškaitė.
“The implementation of that convention, and at the same time all the ideological provisions, will require funding from our own budget, but at the same time there will be European funding. As far as I know, 193 million euros have been earmarked for the execution. It is natural that non-governmental organizations seek to absorb that money, ”says A. Globys.
Opponents of the Convention claim that Lithuania can pass all necessary laws to combat violence against women without ratification. Last year, the police received almost 56,000 complaints of domestic violence, leading to more than 7,000 investigations. Eighty percent of the victims were women.
