Mislabeled eggs are withdrawn from trade in Lithuania

Eggs imported to Lithuania from Ukraine, the packaging of which is marked with the indication “Chicken eggs in bed”. This statement is used without a legal basis and misleads consumers, notes the SFVS report. Ukraine has not yet complied with the strict welfare standards for laying hens in force in the EU, which means that references to laying hen housing methods cannot be used in the packaging of imported Ukrainian eggs. Eggs produced in Ukraine must be labeled with an indication – the method of production, which is a “non-EU standard”.

For Ukrainian eggs to be marketed again, they must be properly labeled so that consumers are not misled, underlines the State Food and Veterinary Service.
