Minsk: EU ministerial meeting with Cichanouskaya – interference in Belarus

“It could be fun and interesting, of course, if it weren’t so sad. Basically, it is quite obvious that such actions, if there are any, are an arrogant and uncovered interference in the internal affairs of our country and a total lack of respect for its citizens, ”said A. Hlaz, quoted by the state agency BelTA.

“Why hold an election, if you can name a certain entity that is convenient in all aspects of the country and pretend to be in contact with it?” After such steps, in my opinion, no one will have to prove that the policy is being applied to undermine the sovereignty of Belarus, “he added.

According to A. Hlaz, “the EU representative in Minsk and the relevant officials in Brussels have already been informed” about Belarus’ “clear and principled position” on this issue.

An EU spokesperson earlier this week said the Community’s foreign ministers and the bloc’s head of diplomacy would meet with Belarusian opposition leader S. Cichanouskaya in Brussels on Monday.

This meeting will take place before the EU Foreign Affairs Council meets to discuss sanctions on Minsk.

“The High Representative / Vice President Josep Borrell has an informal meeting with Mr. Sviatlana Cichanouskaja and the foreign ministers of the EU member states,” EU Foreign Minister Peter Stano said on Thursday.

Cichanouskaya claims to have won the August 9 elections against President Aliaksandr Lukashenko. She was forced to flee to Lithuania, and massive protests broke out in Belarus against the authoritarian leader.

The EU, which does not recognize the official results that led to Lukashenko’s victory, is working on sanctions against his regime officials blamed by the bloc for electoral fraud and violent repression against protesters.

The report on the informal meeting was published in a non-legally binding resolution calling on the European Parliament to impose sanctions on Mr Lukashenko and his entourage.
