“The Belarusian Attorney General’s Office has requested the Polish Ministry of Justice to arrest and extradite Sciapan Pucil and Raman Pratasevich, citizens of the Republic of Belarus, in order to prosecute them,” prosecutors said in a statement.
He also notes that the two are charged with crimes such as organizing riots and inciting social discord.
“As far as we know, these citizens are on Polish territory in Warsaw,” the statement added.
In October, a court in Minsk recognized the Nexta channel and its logo as extremist material. Subsequently, S. Pucila and R. Pratasevičius were charged with inciting riots and their international search was announced.
On the eve, it was reported that the Belarusian authorities demanded that the Polish envoy, Martin Wojciechowski, extradite both opponents as soon as possible.
Belarus has faced massive protests for the fourth month in a row over the August 9 presidential election, which has been declared the winner by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western democracies consider these elections rigged.
Thousands of protesters were detained by the militia during the protests, many of whom later said they had suffered violence and torture from officials. At least four people died in suppressing the protests.
In late September, Canada and Britain announced targeted sanctions against Minsk regime officials, including the country’s authoritarian leader Lukashenko, for the crackdown on protesters.
