“As they protest, I am concerned that they are scaring the locals,” district mayor Algirdas Vrubliauskas told BNS.

According to him, the migrants on Monday did not let the cleaner in, refused to eat and also demanded his release.

“The dry cleaner did not let you in today (…) He screams, he refuses to eat, he asks – when will you let go? In the past, the phones were relevant, now they have recovered them (…) Now they have thought about something again, ”said the mayor.

The town of Verebie, home to several hundred people, is home to more than 160 migrants. According to the district chief, there are complaints from the locals.

“The residents complain, but we explain, we ask for an understanding, it is not easy. But if the migrants scream, then those incidents are unpleasant for the population, ”said A. Vrubliauskas.

Eglė Kačinskienė, a representative of the Alytus County Police, informed BNS that a report on the noise caused by the migrants had been received on Monday, and the Public Security Service (VST) forces reacted to it.

“There have been reports that migrants in Verebie are giving up food and demanding freedom. VST forces reacted to the incident, dealing with the situation. Police officers working there ensure public order in the surrounding territories,” he said a representative of the Alytus County Police.

According to her, order in Verebie is ensured by various police teams, this number could be increased at the request of other services.
