Mexico: Operations carried out on at least two women detained in the United States without their consent

The ministry said in a statement Saturday that officials at its consulate in Atlanta identified the cases last month after allegations of wrongdoing, including sterilization, were heard at a private detention center in Georgia.

The statement said a woman underwent “surgical intervention” but not removal of the uterus, even though she did not consent, and that the woman did not receive postoperative care.

The diplomats also investigated the case of another woman detained in the same center who has already been deported to Mexico. The woman could also have undergone “gynecological surgery without her full consent, without an explanation in Spanish of the medical diagnosis and the nature of the medical procedures.”

The Mexican government announced late last month that it was investigating whether six of its citizens had been sterilized at its immigration detention center in Irvine County without their consent.

That information was provided by a nurse at the center. According to her, the detained women told her that they did not fully understand why they had to remove the uterus.

The NGOs Project South, Georgia Detention Watch, the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and the South Georgia Immigrant Support Network have filed a complaint with the government on behalf of the detained immigrant women and the nurse.
