As EU countries impose travel restrictions to the UK due to a new strain of coronavirus detected in England, the European Commission has asked member states to coordinate actions, but not to prevent people in the UK or Europe come home.
As the EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders put it, “Member States must take coordinated action to avoid unnecessary travel between the UK and the EU.”
“At the same time, a total travel ban should not prevent thousands of EU and UK citizens from returning home,” he said.
According to the EC, people who wish to return to their country or primary residence should be able to do so if they pass a negative COVID-19 test or are quarantined.
Travel bans should not apply to transportation workers crossing the border to or from a ship, road vehicle, or airplane. Medical personnel whose work is deemed necessary in the fight against a pandemic must travel freely without quarantine if, within 72 hours. Before the trip, tests confirmed that they were free of the virus.
