The idea of a COVID-19 vaccination document was raised this month by the European Commission (EC), encouraging countries dependent on tourism to make such a decision based on the economic benefits.
The document aims to encourage travel by those who have already been vaccinated, have a negative response to the COVID-19 test or have already contracted the disease.
Last week MEPs agreed to speed up the consideration of a “digital green certificate” to help speed up the approval process, which could have taken many months or even years.
Mr. López Aguilar assured that a “green passport” could be adopted from June 7 to 10. during the session.
The politician responsible for the negotiations, on behalf of the EP, argued that the protection of consumer data must be protected. It must also be indicated how long the document is valid for.
If Parliament approves the EC proposal, it will have to be formally signed by the Council of the EU, on behalf of the Member States.
The Commission expects this vaccination document to be operational as of June.
However, such plans by the Commission have met with opposition from some countries to discrimination against the population still waiting for the vaccine.
