Men who brutally murdered a prisoner in Lukiškė prison were punished: one of them would sit behind bars for life

Armandas Gonta, 34, and Darius Erikson, 33, were brought to court for a crime committed in December 2018 in Vilnius, in the Lukiškės pre-trial prison. While in the temporary detention cell and in order to reach the desired place of execution, they jointly killed another convict, strangling him.

The pre-trial investigation in this case was conducted by officials from the Serious Crimes Investigation Board of the Vilnius County Police Criminal Police Station, and the investigation was conducted by the First Division prosecutor. Prosecutor of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Rita Vaitekūnienė.

According to the prosecutor R. Vaitekūnienė, after evaluating all the data collected during the investigation, testimony of witnesses and defendants, during the closing speeches he asked the court to impose life imprisonment on both men accused of intentional homicide qualified by hooligan incentives .

“Dozens of convicts feel unpunished even in prisons, they show a total lack of respect for man and society, brutally deprive a person’s life of a trivial pretext, and in my opinion they should be punished with the harshest penalties”, said the prosecutor. He stressed that DE had already been convicted in 2017 of murder in a prison.

On July 2, 2021, the Vilnius Regional Court found both defendants guilty of murder on the grounds of hooliganism. The DE court sentenced him to life imprisonment and AG, combined with a previously imposed and unfulfilled sentence, sentenced him to 25 years in prison.
