Donatas Bagočius, Chief Specialist for Marine Environmental Protection of the Klaipėda Board of the Department of Environmental Protection, was removed from his post due to possible serious misconduct: he allegedly shared official information about spills at sea with third parties, which allegedly limited the possibility of taking legal action against the polluter in the future.

As Lietuvos Rytas found out, those third parties are Environment Minister S. Gentvilas and his advisor Marijus Gailius, who called the ecologist.

Karolis Vaitkevičius, Senior Advisor to Olga Vėbrienė, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection, stated that “officials cannot provide official data to third parties.” He stressed that one is news of a fact that is important to the public, the minister and everyone else, and the other is official information about an investigation in which no one can interfere.

According to Lietuvos Rytas, D. Bagčius explained to the Minister’s adviser who called him that the pilots had established that the oil spill could be about 400 thousand. square meters, and the pollution can reach about 480 liters. The environmentalist warned that it was a subjective assessment, but the Service has no other data: representatives of the Orlen Lietuva company did not provide more precise information on the spilled pollutants.

The incident at the Būtingė terminal took place on the morning of December 28. At that time, it was reported that petroleum products were spilled at the Būtingė terminal belonging to the Polish company Orlen Lietuva, the length of the site was about 4 kilometers and the width of about 100 meters.
