“We are waiting for the so-called third wave. If it really started today, it is possible,” said Feliksas Jankevičius, General Director of Clinicas Santara.

Although epidemiologists say they are assessing whether the third wave has arrived in a few weeks, the situation in hospitals is deteriorating rapidly.

The December scenario is approaching in the Vilnius region. The Santara clinic has already filled half of the COVID-19 resuscitation beds and 70 percent of the individual beds. About 80 percent of the beds for COVID-19 patients were filled throughout the Vilnius region.

For example, the COVID-19 ward at Trakai Hospital was practically full as soon as it opened.

Therefore, the coronavirus wards are being expanded again in the largest support hospital – the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital.

“As for the city of Vilnius, we have agreed at the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital that it will have to expand 50 additional beds by the weekend. Of course, the potential of the Vilnius City Clinical Hospital is significantly higher, we will be able to expand to 100 beds in the near future, ”said F. Jankevičius.

Doctors are only comforted by the fact that most of the staff have been vaccinated and most of the patients at the Santara clinics have not yet.

“So far, the majority are unvaccinated patients, without a doubt,” said F. Jankevičius, CEO of Clinicas Santara.

Of the roughly 180 seriously ill patients treated at the Santara clinics, a third are infected with a British strain of the virus. It currently dominates the counties of Vilnius and Marijampolė. However, it is also spreading to other regions.

Several cases of the South African strain of coronavirus have also been reported. It is against this strain that the effect of the vaccine is less. Additionally, there is an increase in the number of younger patients with severe COVID-19.

“It just came to our knowledge then. But we know it: 50 years is the limit that occurs more and more frequently,” said F. Jankevičius.

Let the LNK know, the Brazilian strain of coronavirus has already reached Lithuania. So far, one such case has been recorded.

“It is quite rare in all the countries of the European Union, its prevalence is not high. However, we do not have any information at this time that it would cause a more serious form of the disease, but our connection to the vaccine must be evaluated very carefully, ”said Loreta Ašoklienė, Lithuania’s chief epidemiologist.

The situation is also deteriorating in the vicinity of Panevėžys.

Although less than half of the COVID-19 patient beds are occupied here, doctors have no doubt that the peak will be reached in the near future.

“It just came to our attention then. If we talk about Panevėžys and Utena counties, the number of cases is increasing. But we know that sickness is delayed about 2 weeks in hospitals. This is what we hope will increase in our hospital as well. next week, ”said Arvydas Skorupskas, director of the Republican Panevėžys Hospital.

Panevėžys doctors are also concerned about the growing number of British patients infected with the coronavirus strain in the region. Almost all COVID-19 patients treated at Panevėžys Hospital have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Only one case was registered from the vaccinated population. However, the symptoms were mild and the patient was quickly discharged for treatment at home.
