Laura Matjošaišytė, president of the CEC, stated that the Migration Department had no information that A. Guoga had renounced the citizenship of a foreign country, so the CEC asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm whether the information provided by A. Guoga was correct.
Guoga said that the CEC had submitted an official document issued by the Australian Department of the Interior indicating that his request for revocation of his country’s citizenship, filed on July 31, had already been granted. The Australians reportedly granted A. Guoga’s wish to renounce her citizenship less than a week later, on August 5. It is true that the document submitted to the CEC also states that Mr. Guoga still has 28 days to submit a passport or other proof of prior citizenship to the Australian Department of the Interior.
According to the portal, doubts about whether the candidate for the Seimas is not bound by an oath with another state are reinforced by the fact that the letter delivered to the organizers of the elections by A. Guoga is on an official form, but not confirmed by a signature.
According to the Constitution, a Lithuanian citizen who is not bound by an oath or promise to a foreign state and who is at least 25 years old on election day and resides permanently in Lithuania can be elected a member of the Seimas.
