“This is a unique treasure found less than a month ago in the Vilnius district,” said archaeologist from the Lithuanian National Museum Paulius Blaževičius. – It is unique in its composition, but above all, in the period of the fourteenth century. final, if it is more precisely – 1390. In such a place, in the Vilnius district, we did not know of any objects (settlements, mounds, burials) from the 4th century. “
The treasure was found by the owner of a metal detector, who reported it to the Department of Cultural Heritage. The scientist says the treasure hunt took place in an area the size of a football field.
The find consists of a total of 62 objects.
As for the coins, there are also Prague pennies, which P. Blaževičius equates to the hundreds of current euro banknotes. In addition, two coins from before the time when Jogaila became king, one minted after Jogaila’s baptism, the rest, with a rider on a horse, who is not Vytis, but symbolically represents the ruler, said the numismatist Eduard Remec.
When asked what the treasure was worth today, P. Blaževičius said that he could not answer, because such a thing is simply invaluable. The scientist also did not reveal the value of the insured find.
“It is difficult to determine the exact value, because there were no written sources on the prices in Lithuania at that time. Just for those two pieces of silver it was possible to buy a good horse and leave money for a sword. Or three bulls. Or a herd of pigs. Or buy a small farm and farm there, “said E. Remecas.
It was probably owned by a soldier, and not a servant, but it was already sold out, but it was not a long-term savings, but a unit salary. “For example, a man got paid for something and he hid it,” Remec said. The fact that he was an elite man gives away the ring found in the treasure.
The exact reasons why the hideout did not seize his property are unclear, but according to P. Blaževičius, the circumstances of the treasure’s concealment are motivated by the historical events of that time. “When evaluating the last treasury coins, which date back to 1390, it can be seen that they coincide with the Crusader attack on Vilnius. So maybe that’s what coin hiding is all about, but that’s just hypothesis. At the moment, we are still investigating the treasure itself and the objects that are nearby, ”says the archaeologist.
Along with the treasure, ceramics and other artifacts were found.
Asked about the importance of this treasure, P. Blaževičius affirms that it is one of the ten treasures of that period that are in Lithuania. “There are only a few of the collections that are kept in museums. In addition, it has a unique composition: there is a great variety of cut coins from Prague, adapted to the local market,” the researchers said.
“We would like to thank the person who found the treasure and acted as a citizen and informed the state,” said Arminas Šileikis, spokesman for the National Museum of Lithuania.
Treasury until August 1. It can be inspected at the History House of the Lithuanian National Museum, T.Kosčiuškos str 3. Later, it will be handed over for scientists to investigate.
