With this in mind, buyers are advised to buy cars with SDK only. It will be possible to check if it is valid in a dedicated public search. It is also advisable to indicate the code in the sales contract. This will protect the interests of the buyer, since the person will know the real owner and if it later turns out that the car is defective, it will be clear who to turn to and who to claim compensation.
Remember that the SDK is a unique vehicle owner declaration code consisting of 8 letters. It will be mandatory for all motor vehicles and their trailers located in the country and owned by Lithuanian residents or companies. A new code will also be generated every time the vehicle owner changes.
How will the SDK be provided to vehicles already in Lithuania?
May 1 The SDK will be provided free of charge for all vehicles registered in Lithuania (except those temporarily registered and exported abroad), of which there are currently about 2 million. There is no need for its owners to do anything, as the code will be assigned automatically and can be accessed simply online.
At that time, owners will have to apply to Regitra for vehicles located in Lithuania but not yet registered. They have a transitional period of three months until July 31. In this case, the SDK will also be available online for free if proof of ownership is presented, such as a contract of sale, etc.
It is important to know that if a vehicle is to be sold or registered, the SDK must be obtained before performing these steps and not wait until July 31st.
Who will have to declare the change of ownership?
From now on, declaring a change of ownership when acquiring a vehicle and registering it will be two completely separate processes. In other words, the new owner will need to be registered in the system first and only then can they apply for registration. If you are not planning to drive the vehicle, you do not need to register it.
It is also one of the fundamental changes that the buyer, and not the seller, must first apply to Regitra.
Lithuanian residents and companies must declare the change of ownership of the vehicle in all cases when buying and selling vehicles both on the territory of Lithuania and abroad. And residents and foreign companies will only have to do so by buying and selling vehicles on the territory of Lithuania.
Lithuanian residents must declare the change of ownership within 5 working days (the period is calculated jointly for the buyer and the seller) and foreign residents – on the day of the conclusion of the transaction.
The presentation of the declaration and provision of the SDK online will be free, at that time the price of this service in the Regitra branches will be 4.20 euros. Vehicle registration services will be provided at the same prices as before.
