The solemn ceremony will take place during E. Macron’s visit to Vilnius next week, VU announced.
According to Rimvydas Petrauskas, Rector of the University, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa was awarded to the French leader for the visionary idea of the European University Alliance: to create joint European university networks and expand the Erasmus + exchange initiative.
“It can be said that the French president started the process of these significant changes and did so while preserving the idea of a classical university and respect for autonomy,” said Petrauskas.
According to the VU report, for the first time E. Macron formulated the proposal of the European University Network while speaking at the Sorbonne University in Paris in 2017. This speech became the basis for the vision of the EU summit in Gothenburg in the field of education and culture. Macron identified investment in knowledge and culture as one of the key elements to achieve breakthrough in problem areas by strengthening European identity, developing cultural intelligence and linguistic diversity, increasing social diversity and access to mobility for all and strengthen European studies at all levels of education.
Two years later, the European Commission has announced the first pilot networks of European universities with a budget of 5 million euros. Euro funding to establish joint structures and strengthen partnerships.
Now the European University Alliance unites the universities of Vilnius, Lyon (France), Bergen (Norway), Graz (Austria), Leipzig (Germany), Padua (Italy) and Granada (Spain).
