EU-Russia relations deteriorated in 2014 the latter annexed Crimea. The annexation raised concerns about a possible conflict in Eastern Europe. France has fallen out with several EU countries over calls for a resumption of dialogue with Vladimir Putin to reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons.
“Tango is danced in two, both parties have the same principle to engage in dialogue, so the progress of the conversation also depends on the willingness of the other party to get involved,” Macron said in the Latvian capital, Riga.
During his visit to the Baltic states, Macron tried to address Russia’s concern to the Allies. Macron’s visit to the region is the French president’s first visit to the Baltic countries in twenty years, during which he seeks to express his support for the Belarusian opposition in the face of the crisis and address the growing tensions with Russia.
“This dialogue would allow us to build a much more stable and secure relationship with Russia,” Macron told a press conference with Latvian Prime Minister Artur Krishjan Military.
“Such dialogue does not question or compromise in any way its security, nor does it deny its history,” said the French president.
