“Our country, as a link between the West and the East, has entered the epicenter of the clash of civilizations. “We are not fattening the colors, but we are affirming the fact that NATO’s offensive military infrastructure is systematically concentrating on our borders,” was quoted by the state news agency BELTA.
According to Lukashenko, in addition to the international forces deployed in Poland, a new mechanized division is forming near Belarus, supported by modern American “Abrams” tanks.
“The two battalions will be literally 20 kilometers from Brest,” said the Belarusian leader.
“The security and defense system created during the years of independence, a coherent peaceful policy and international agreements provide us with a basis to repel military threats,” he continued.
“Russia and many other countries are interested in a strong Belarus. Because this is Russia’s own strength. The destabilization in central Europe will certainly be contagious and will cause a chain reaction that will spread to the East, West and South.” Lukashenko said.
He said he was ready to deploy Russian troops to his country if the situation worsened.
“If it is necessary for the security of the state of the Union that we are building, the security of Belarus and Russia, to deploy all the armed forces here with all kinds of weapons, they will be deployed here immediately,” Lukashenko warned.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Friday that Minsk had not yet asked the Kremlin to deploy forces on Belarusian territory.
“No requests have been received from Belarus on this issue. You know that this is only possible after an official speech from the leaders of one country to the leaders of another. In this regard, there are legal procedures and legal powers,” Peskov told journalists.
He also emphasized that the deployment of Russian troops in Belarus is not necessary at this time.
Speaking about Western sanctions, Lukashenko argued that their main objective was to provoke riots by making life difficult for ordinary Belarusians.
“The West itself understands the loss of sanctions tactics. Therefore, sanctions are applied in stages, in packages. They are looking for our painful places. Export sectors of the Belarusian economy are particularly affected: petrochemicals, machinery, potassium , etc. However, the main objective is to leave people without pensions, wages, benefits, education, medical services and cause dissatisfaction among Belarusians, ”said the head of state.
Last month, the European Union took criminal action against key sectors of the Belarusian economy, forcing the landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk and the arrest of opposition blogger Raman Pratasevich.
In addition, Brussels threatened to extend the sanctions imposed on Belarus last year for cracking down on protests after the controversial presidential elections.
