“The president has decided to fire the current government. A corresponding order has been signed,” reported the Belarusian state television channel 1.
Early Wednesday Lukashenko held a meeting to discuss proposals for a new government. The President has promised that there will be no revolutionary reforms in the government.
Lukashenko announced last week that he planned to form a new government ahead of the August 9 presidential elections.
He soon confirmed such plans.
“I have spoken about this (change of government) and I will,” Lukashenko said, adding that he will appoint an interim prime minister in the near future.
Previously, Lukashenko explained that “by registering the current president as a presidential candidate, we always announce a new composition of the government before the elections.” According to him, the strategy aims to increase voter confidence.
The current government has been in office since August 18, 2018; It is headed by Prime Minister Sergei Rumas.
