Belorussian presumed leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide the country with various weapons, state news agency BelTA reported.

Facing a massive wave of protests over the rigged presidential elections, Lukashenko also said that new presidential elections would be held in the country once a new constitution is adopted.

He made these comments after his meeting with Putin the day before in Sochi.

Joint military exercises with Russia began in Belarus on Monday. On the same day, Lukashenko visited Sochi, where he met with Putin. Here, he complained that NATO countries had conducted military exercises near the Belarusian border during the protests.

Mr. Lukashenko stated that a battalion of NATO soldiers had recently been “expelled” 15 km from the country’s border in Lithuania. Lukashenko suggested planning a joint exercise with Russia “over the next year” and “ignoring what he would tell us about it.”
