Ask for voluntary help
“Attention to all who can and want to help! At this time, when the epidemic is gaining momentum, there is a huge need for volunteers in the LSMU Kaunas Hospital Infectious Diseases Department in the Emergency Services. The help of volunteers at the limit of human capacities for the balanced medical staff of our hospital, who work in the busiest departments, would be a great boost.
The main tasks of the volunteers are patient care: feeding, washing, assisting in movement, lifting, transporting, assisting the nursing staff in performing procedures. It would be great if the volunteer could work as a team, have communication skills, be responsible and supportive ”, write the hospital representatives on their Facebook account.
LSMU Kaunas Hospital is looking for volunteers
According to them, LSMU Kaunas Hospital is one of the largest medical institutions in Lithuania that receives the flow of COVID-19 patients, thus facing daily challenges in the fight against this disease.
Our physicians are already working beyond their capabilities and have to strengthen the Infectious Diseases Department team from other departments. And that means reducing other medical services. Due to the COVID-19 disease, 32 of our employees are unable to work, and around 100 are self-isolating, ”it was announced on November 3. hospital report.
Volunteers are already requesting
Saulius Tvirbutas, the chief communication specialist of the Kaunas Hospital, does not hide that he did not want to intimidate the public, but the decision was made not to hide it: in the wards where patients with COVID-19 are treated, the situation with the staff it gets more and more complicated.
“We should just make a difference, we are not inviting volunteers to those departments in the future.” We bring people from other departments to strengthen the COVID-19 treatment team. We have over a hundred of these patients, about half of whom need oxygen. The intensive care unit for resuscitation is also operating at full capacity, so the workload is high. It is already twice as much as during the most difficult period of flu season in previous years.
The staff have already exceeded the limits of their capabilities. And other services have to be cut and people are needed everywhere. If we moved nursing assistants from other departments to the COVID-19 building, there would be places where help would be needed: to transport the patient, change the bedding, etc., this job does not require special education or special preparation, ”said S .Tvirbutas.

According to him, it may seem that about 30 sick doctors and about 100 in self-isolation are not many, when about three thousand work in all the departments of the hospital, but sometimes enough to paralyze work.
We should simply differentiate ourselves, we are not inviting volunteers to those departments in the future. We bring in people from other departments to strengthen the COVID-19 treatment team.
S.Tvirbutas was glad that, at least in the Infectious Diseases Department, the hospital could prevent the outbreak at least for now.
And about 30 volunteers who want to help Kaunas Hospital through difficult times have already applied. Most of them are students of subjects related to medicine, but there are also people who just want to volunteer. The main applicant is the 52nd.
Reduce scheduled services
As the Department of Infectious Diseases needs the help of other departments, it was decided to strengthen the department team from the beginning of November in Josvainių str. In Unit 2, stop performing urological, surgical and gynecological operations, but only to provide emergency surgical assistance. The scheduled surgery services remain in the units of the LSMU Kaunas Hospital in Hipodromo str. and Laisvės al.
November 3, 106 COVID-19 patients were treated at LSMU Kaunas Hospital, 52 of them needed oxygen masks. 6 intensive care beds were occupied.
However, at least on social media, the hospital has received not only offers of support and assistance, but also criticism that it does not want to allocate money and hire new staff, so it is expected to find free labor.
In response, S.Tvirbutas stated that the principle of volunteering is to work without pay. And the financial capabilities of the hospital are also limited, and the permanent staff requirements would be much higher than those asked of volunteers, so hiring additional staff is not as easy as it may seem to someone.
Santara Clinics does not consider such options
As of November 4, the Santara clinics are treating 117 COVID-19 patients, including 13 in the Resuscitation and Intensive Care Unit. Of the 117 patients with COVID-19, 2 are children.
According to Managing Director Aušra Bilotienė-Motiejūnienė, given that around 20 new patients are hospitalized per day, VUL Santara clinics should discuss new places for COVID-19 patients with support hospitals in the region, speak to Ukmergė, Alytus and others hospitals.
Currently, 61 COVID-19 patients are being treated at Vilnius City Clinical Hospital, one of them in the Resuscitation Intensive Care Unit. The day before, it was announced that 40 doctors had been diagnosed with coronavirus infection in clinics as of October 1, and 46 doctors had been isolated due to contact with infected people.
“As colleagues from Kaunas announced, the Santara Clinic has been analyzing that volunteering very carefully until now, the hospital did not consider such an option. Our additional teams are made up of employees from other departments who voluntarily accepted and agreed to be included in the reserve lists. ”, The medical institution answered the question of whether the Santara clinics will not have to seek such help.
