The portal tv3.lt spoke with the oncodermatologist Viktor Sidorov about the danger and risk of skin cancer caused by the sun.

The doctor at the Vilnius Center for Laser Dermatology explains that most skin cancers are caused by direct sunlight, so great care must be taken.

“Skin cancer has different forms. Some are more dangerous, others less dangerous. Between 70 and 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by the harmful effects of the sun. The sunny period actually carries a higher risk if a person is not protected from the sun.

If we also go to other countries where it is sunny in winter, we must also be protected from the sun there and tan there. In this case, the sun is enemy number one for us, and all other factors are genetics or what is the second or even the third, ”he says.

Skin cancer

Symptoms are often not worrisome

“Let’s divide skin cancer into two large groups: neoplasms, of which there are two main ones: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and the other group is pigmented tumors, which is melanoma. Of course, the majority of people know about melanoma, because we also provide the most training on it, ”says the dermatologist.

According to him, melanoma is more dangerous, so more information is spread about it. As a result of the symptoms that go unnoticed, people often land a forehand, often causing the disease to be neglected.

“Melanoma is more dangerous, so it’s just getting more attention. Because these cancers happen differently, they look different.

If we talk about tumors of epithelial origin, then they are new tumors. They appear as a nodular shape, sometimes people call it acne, but it can also be a non-protruding skin formation that spreads completely on the surface, the texture of the skin in that place is a little different, it may have a different shade – redness, whiteness, or something else.

That derivative does not hurt, as a rule, it grows slowly and people live with them for a long time because it does not bother them. It seems that a wound has appeared and will heal immediately, but it is not yet healed. And when that wound doesn’t heal later, it’s the realization that something is wrong.

And melanoma is a tumor very similar to a mole, it can be colored: light, dark brown, black, red, a mixture of all these colors can be. In 80 percent of cases, some small dot appears and gradually increases. It is very rare that it grows fast. But most of the time, because it grows slowly and is painless, a person often ignores it. “

V. Sidorov recalls that the symptoms are generally not anxious, they do not hurt, no discomfort is felt. Often times, the disease only worries those around them. “And it often happens that a family member begins to show with his finger that something has appeared or that the wound does not heal, or that sometimes it bleeds.

Or it even encourages people to check, if they find nothing on the body, that if a relative is already identified for someone, then the whole family is already running to check. For people, the main alarm is pain, and here nothing hurts ”.

Creams – sun protection only

The dermatologist replied that sunbed radiation is also harmful and can cause cancer. Visiting too frequently can lead to unwanted results.

“Solariums also contain ultraviolet radiation and that spectrum is harmful in any case. If a person goes to the solarium about 10 times a year, we assume that person has a higher risk of developing skin cancer, ”he says.

According to the doctor, you should not be fooled: sunscreens themselves do not protect against cancer.

“Creams protect against ultraviolet rays, and the same ultraviolet rays can cause cancerous damage to the skin. These creams do not directly protect against cancer, they only protect against one of the most common causes.

But for those creams to work properly, they need to be applied correctly. It is best to choose creams with a minimum of 30-50 SPF, there must be protection from ultraviolet rays A and B, apply we advise every 2-3 hours and the appropriate amount, not on the fingertips to take the cream, you must be seen applying the cream. When a person does everything right, they don’t even see that tan.

It’s not that if they put a cream on you, you’ll never get 100% skin cancer, it won’t. “
