The biggest drama took place in Montpellier, where, in addition to the French hosts, the teams of Portugal, Croatia and Tunisia also faced each other. The latter did not score a single victory and failed to challenge the European teams more seriously.

On the first day of competition, the French defeated the Croatian team 30:26 and this victory can be said for them and paved the way for the Olympics.

The Croats defeated the Portuguese in handball 25:24 on Saturday after a moody fight, so it was all decided in a match between the French and the Portuguese on Sunday.

The match ended with the satisfactory result of both teams, leaving the two-time Croatian Olympic champion (1996 and 2004) without the Olympic Games. In a fantastic fight, the competitor of the Lithuanian team in the European Championship selection competition, the Portuguese team broke the French team 29:28. After three teams scored two victories, Croatia was left without the Olympics due to the worst goal ratio. For the Portuguese team, this achievement is historic, as the country’s team had never participated in the Olympic Games before.

We remind you that the Lithuanians lost to the Portuguese 26:34 (14:18) in the national team match in Vilnius.

In the other groups, things were a bit easier. The least intrigue was in the first group in Podgorica, where the Norwegian team easily won the ticket. The Norwegians won all three matches on double-digit goal differences.

The second ticket went to the Brazilians, who defeated Chile (26:24) and beat South Korea – 30:24 in the decisive match. The latter remained in third place by beating the Chilean handball players in a 36:35 match.

In the third group, the Swedish and German teams won their tickets for the Berlin Olympics. The two teams began the selection by sharing a point: 25:25.

Later, the Germans 36:27 confidently defeated the Slovenians and 34:26 beat Algeria. The Swedes didn’t have much trouble either and they defeated Algeria 36:25 and defeated the Slovenian handball players 32:25.
