A. Šerkšnienė got known competitors in his semi-final race, whose names he would like to see not in the semi-final, but in the fight for the medals. In September, at the Diamond League stage in Rome, the Lithuanian finished second, behind the Dutch Liekė Klaver, but beating the Polish titled Justynas Šwiety-Ersetic. These three athletes were marked as favorites before the start, but only two tickets to the final.
J. Šwiety-Ersetic finished first, improving the Polish record (51.34 seconds), and L. Klaver – second (52.09 seconds). Both athletes performed better than the Lithuanian record set by A.Šerkšnienė this year (52.12 sec.). In the second round of the semi-finals, our leader went ahead after the first 100 meters, but finished fifth (53.09 seconds).
“The tactic was to get off to a good start, because the semi-finals were very strong. He was champion of Europe in Poland, a strong Englishman and a Dutchman; they all have tactics that start out strong. The goal was to keep up, to go smoothly. The start was successful, and then, I don’t know … Lots of indoor tactics. If I remember correctly, I got it back so they pinched me from the outside, I closed. I probably lost there, because I immediately found myself in fifth place, and then it is impossible to lose three or four places, ”said A. Šerkšnienė.
In qualifying that took place on Friday morning, the Lithuanian ran the distance in 53.00 seconds. The athlete says he felt fresh in the semifinals and didn’t waste too much effort on the selection.
“I didn’t feel bad because the morning race was at a comfortable pace. I was not very tired in the morning and now, very tactfully, I did not run. What a sport ”, smiled A. Šerkšnienė.
M. Morauskaitė ran in the third of the three semi-finals, which was attended by Swiss defender Lea Sprunger and Dutch season leader Femke Bol. The latter achieved the best result of all participants in the semi-finals (51.17 sec. ), And the second ticket to the final was eliminated by the British Jodie Williams (52.09 sec.). M. Morauskaitė finished fourth among the six race participants – 53.20 sec.
In the national team, ours reached a personal record – 52.52 sec.
“Of course, the result is really unsatisfactory, but I am basically satisfied. I knew that my chances of reaching the final were slim. I decided to take the opportunity and learn to run indoors, how hard I need to fight for the position. The lesson is really very good, only in such competitions can you learn it, ”said M. Morauskaitė.
The Lithuanian track and field athlete’s tactical maneuvers in the semifinals were performed almost flawlessly. M.Morauskaitė, who got off to a great start and after 200 meters, when the runners run from one of the tracks to one, was in a comfortable position, challenged the leaders and contributed to the fact that our two-time European champion L Sprunger was on the final table.
“It just came to my attention then. I saw that as in qualifying I was running with Lea and it was very uncomfortable to run behind her long legs. I thought that this time I would take a more comfortable position, I would take risks, because I am running from experience, I did a great job. I died brutally in the end, but it didn’t matter, I liked it ”, laughed M. Morauskaitė.
On Saturday, the last representatives of the Lithuanian team will begin their performance in the European Championship: Gediminas Truskauskas will run 60m, Rapolas Saulius will start in the 60m hurdles, and Diana Zagainova will start in the triathlon classification.
