Donatas Umbrasas, 27, has been charged with brutal murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at Crown Court in Cambridge. A man has the right to request commutation of his sentence after 15 years.
Another accomplice to the crime is Tomas Lazdauskas, 24, sentenced to 10 years in prison. It was recognized that he was only an accessory to the crime and that he had no intention of killing, but he did not prevent it.
On the day of the disaster, T. Lazdauskas invited M. Arlauskas to his home in Visby. They wanted to find out the personal relationship between the two women. The victim, who arrived at the house, found the host with another compatriot – D. Umbras, both of whom had already drunk.
Soon a fight broke out between the trio and D. Umbrasas smashed the victim, started punching, kicking. He was then dragged from the house to the inner courtyard, where he was beaten to death with a metal pipe, outdoor chairs, and other items by hand.
Subsequently, the victim was placed on his own bicycle and transferred from his home to the industrial neighborhood. Closed circuit television cameras also captured this. In an attempt to destroy the evidence, the Lithuanians set the compatriot’s body on fire and withdrew from the scene.
In the morning of May 9, around 5 a.m., a passerby found the victim’s body and presented himself to officials.
Lord Umbras immediately admitted his guilt, but this did not mitigate the punishment.
