As early as noon in central New York, merchants began to jail shop windows, flower pots disappeared from the streets, and quarantined stores were closed. On Sunday night, the city sank into chaos: protesters clashed with police, riots and looting ensued. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that the curfew will be introduced in New York City starting at 11 p.m. until 5 pm. in the morning.

Anthony W. Marx, president of the New York Public Library, accurately described the feeling of the last days and months that everyone experiences in New York today: “This is an unprecedented moment in the history of the United States; We all feel it. The pandemic remains a great challenge for everyone, and for many it has been tragic. Now, the horrible death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the protests that have taken place make us think even more. COVID-19 expanded and revealed our deepest failures and hidden flaws. We support the black community, we have a heart ache due to a country divided by racial injustice, arrogance and hatred. It is hard not to be sad, not angry, and to find hope, ”writes G. Michnevičiūtė.
