Last week, the LTG Cargo freight company of the Lithuanian Railways Group (LTG) delivered the first tractor semi-trailer from the Klaipeda seaport to the Vilnius Intermodal Terminal (VIT).
During the test transport, the semi-trailer that arrived by ferry from Denmark to the Central Freight Terminal (CKT) was loaded onto a special LTG Cargo train platform and transported to VIT. In Vilnius, the cargo was loaded onto a semi-trailer and transported back to the port of Klaipeda.
“When conducting technology tests, our goal is to be as prepared as possible for regular transport of semi-trailers. This year, we have successfully transported semi-trailers from Germany to Lithuania, now we are also conducting tests in Lithuania and we combine rail and sea transportation throughout the entire freight logistics chain. In this way, we plan to offer connections to potential clients not only in Lithuania, but also abroad. In Europe, the transport of semi-trailers by train is developing and gaining popularity for two main reasons: firstly, relocating semi-trailers on rail frees roads and increases road safety, and secondly, it makes a significant contribution to protecting the environment by significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions. “- Egidijus Lazauskas, General Manager of LTG Cargo, is quoted in the report.
LTG Cargo plans to start the regular transport of semi-trailers later this year, and customers will also be offered connections to Scandinavian ports: Kiel, Karlsham, Treleborg.
Today, around 3,000 trucks with semi-trailers pass the Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda highway every day. One LTG Cargo train can carry around 40 semi-trailers.
