“As Foreign Ministers of the Lublin Triangle, we are deeply concerned about the escalation of the situation in Belarus after the presidential elections and call on the authorities not to use force and release all those detained yesterday,” said the release.

The Ministers of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine highlighted the importance of human rights and at the same time offered mediation for dialogue.

“Respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights, including democracy and the rule of law, is essential for the future development of an independent and sovereign Belarus, which we fully support,” the ministers said.

“We are convinced that only through dialogue can the current situation be resolved for the benefit of the people and state of Belarus. If necessary, we are ready to provide any benevolent assistance through this dialogue,” the statement said.

The ministers state that “the well-being and prosperity of Belarus and its people are important for Europe as a whole, and for our region in particular.”

“We are all interested in continuing mutually beneficial dialogue and cooperation based on democratic values and focused on creating the conditions for a common and stable future,” the statement said.

The president of Belarus, loyal to Alexander Lukashenko, announced on Monday that he had been re-elected for another term with a landslide victory. The opposition claims that the results have been falsified, that protests have started in Belarus, that they have been severely repressed by the militia, and dozens of people have been injured in the riots.
