Lithuania – like Kaunas: options “eliminate peasants” or “against Landsbergis”

G. Landsbergis ran into the Conservative Bastion

“There was no question about who to vote for, I voted for Gabriel Landsberg. In my opinion, he is a politician from a different and superior culture than the current government. The management of the “peasants” and their prohibitions will suffice. Changes must come, ”said a middle-aged woman who had voted in the electoral district of Center-Žaliakalnis, which is called the Conservative Bastion in Kaunas.

Audronė Jankuvienė, representative of the “peasants” and member of parliament belonging to this party, entered the second round with the conservative leader G. Landsbergis. Judging by the speeches of other voters, several people went to the polls on Sunday to vote “no” but “no.”

“Conservatives must not be allowed to take effect again. We have heard what was said: They are already preparing to tighten their belts, reduce pensions and benefits, and legalize the marriages of ‘those people’. Therefore, my voice is unequivocally “against” my grandson, “said the elderly Kaunas resident.

Several more voters said they didn’t have much to choose from, so they voted against what they said was less bad. The two spouses interviewed admitted that the ballot papers were damaged.

The single-member constituency of Center-Žaliakalnis became the only one in which the Conservatives managed to preserve their positions in the 2016 Seimas elections, and G. Landsbergis celebrated victory. In other single-member constituencies in Kaunas, the Conservative crowned the LUJ representatives who won the elections.

Choose a lesser evil

Kaunas residents who voted in other Kaunas constituencies also mentioned voting against, and the reasons for their choice varied widely.

“I voted against Aurelia Veryga. It was time to end the prohibitions for which I was most famous. I had no choice, I voted for the representative of the National Union Gintarė Skaistė, although I do not like it very much, I was drunk, I was drunk” said an aged student from Kaunas who voted in the Panemunė constituency.

Another young voter said he was liberal, so he voted “against” the ruling peasants in the second round.

“It is a pity that it is not registered in the Volunteer District, where a representative of the Freedom Party entered the second round. In the first round I voted for the liberal movement, now for the conservative Vytautas Juozapaitis, or more precisely, “against” the peasant representative, “said the girl.

“There is no need to allow conservatives to take over. I highly doubt they care about ordinary people, their destinies. That is why I voted against them,” said the middle-aged woman.

After voting for the peasants, they want continuity of work

“It is important that the works started in Kaunas continue. The city was unmanaged for so many years when it was run by conservatives, completely abandoned. It is now clear that both the desire and the opportunity to change the city have finally emerged. You know, it would be very painful for everything to start and stop. Therefore, I voted in favor of the “peasants” supported by Mayor V. Matijošaitis, so that the work started by him could continue so that he would not be hindered, “said the Kaunas citizen who gave her vote to the Delfi portal .

Another voter in Kaunas, who voted for the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union, mentioned that he was satisfied with the government’s work and did not see the need to change anything during the pandemic.

“They are blaming the rulers for various restrictions and limitations. But they are unavoidable. Take a look at the disease statistics and everything will be clear. The government has no choice, those restrictions are necessary. I think they are behaving wisely, for I voted for that ”, the voter considered.

The Lithuanian Union of Greens and Peasants, whose representatives competed with the Conservatives in the second round of Sunday’s elections, has never had at least a slightly stronger political position in Kaunas. His triumph in the single-member elections in Kaunas during the last Seimas elections was mainly determined by the active support of the city’s mayor, V. Matijošaitis. Conservatives elected after the Seimas tenure in Kaunas, who got tired and voted against, were also voted against. The defeat was also influenced by conflicts within the Kaunas Conservatives.

However, this time it seems that V. Matijošaitis’ support to the partners is not as intense as four years ago. Also, the popularity of the mayor of Kaunas among the townspeople is not the same as before. Therefore, it is possible that the supporting factor of the mayor of Kaunas in the election of members of the Seimas in single-member districts of the city is no longer essential this time.
