According to the Ministry of National Defense, Brigadier General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Georgs Kerlins, Commander of the Latvian Land Forces, and Major General Sirelel, Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces from Estonia, signed the agreement in Latvia’s Adazi Battalion at the end of the 2020 Winter Shield international exercise.
This document is intended to focus future cooperation on intelligence, fire support, force protection, and non-kinetic operations.
The agreement also defines the main means of cooperation in 2021: participation in international exercises, qualification courses, seminars, military competitions, staff talks and other events.
The Baltic Battalion project began in 1994 with the signing of a tripartite agreement in Riga to establish the Baltic Peacekeeping Battalion.
The battalion has been ready for peacekeeping missions since 1997 and has participated in international peacekeeping operations with Danish and Swedish troops.
Since 2001, the Baltic States have launched separate projects with the Scandinavian countries – Lithuania with Denmark has launched the LITBAT project, Latvia with Sweden – LATBAT and Estonia with Finland – ESTBAT, so the mission of the Baltic Battalion has been completed.
The decision on the restoration of BALTBAT in 2012 was made by the Ministers of Defense of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and in 2014 a memorandum on the formation of the battalion was signed.
This year, the Baltic Battalion is on duty in the NATO Response Force. The battalion includes soldiers from Lithuania’s Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorized Infantry Battalion.
In the “Winter Shield 2020” exercise on November 21, the Baltic Battalion and the NATO-reinforced battle group were trained to carry out joint defense tasks for the Baltic States.
