Latvia reported that their company Ovostar imported dangerous eggs from Ukraine and that Lidl Lietuva bought and sold the shipment in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian service also tested another batch of Ukrainian eggs, but no salmonella was found in them.

According to experts, these cases are isolated. For example, last year, residues of salinomycin, a veterinary drug in excess of the maximum level, were detected in quail eggs.

A total of 78 egg samples were selected and analyzed during this year, but no contamination was detected.

SFVS labeling tips

When the supply of chicken eggs imported from non-EU countries appears on the Lithuanian market, SFVS specialists draw the attention of consumers to the fact that when choosing these products for their table, it is especially important to carefully read the labeling information.

It should be noted that the reference to “rearing method is a” non-EU standard “means that the eggs were obtained without complying with the EU welfare requirements for laying hens. If the non-EU egg producer has installed housing systems that meet EU animal welfare requirements (as confirmed by European Commission auditors), no additional labeling is required on eggs.

It is recalled that, according to current EU legislation, eggs are marked with a mark consisting of a sequence of numbers and letters. The first number in the egg indicates how laying hens are kept: 1 – in the open air, 2 – in the litter (in chicken coops, outdoors in farms), 3 – in cages, 0 – organic eggs (hens raised according to with the requirements of organic farming) using only natural additives).

The letters in the middle of the label indicate the country code (LT – chicken eggs raised in Lithuania, UA – in Ukraine, LV – in Latvia, PL – in Poland). The third part of the mark indicates the veterinary authorization number of the hen house, indicating that the farm is under the control of the competent veterinary service.
