Attitudes changed when I started speaking Lithuanian
M. Sargsyan is not hiding: as soon as he arrived in Lithuania it was not easy, he saw that Armenians and Lithuanians are a little different. However, everything changed when they learned the Lithuanian language.
“Lithuania, while I was speaking Russian, was much more closed. Maybe it would have been different in Vilnius, but I am very happy to have come to Šiauliai, where very few people spoke Russian. Otherwise, I would not have experienced a real Lithuania. In Vilnius, I don’t always feel the real Lithuania, and when you go to Samogitia or Marijampolė, you can feel the differences of character, ”says M. Sargsyan.
When he arrived, he saw what many foreigners were doing: Lithuanians turned out to be quite closed people. However, when he spoke Lithuanian, he felt that he was beginning to accept Lithuanians as his own. He says that he is not angry about it, on the contrary, he has that approach, because he himself would like people who have decided to live in Armenia to learn the local language.
“I can say the same to everyone who lives in Lithuania: if you want to be a full-fledged resident of this country, learn to speak Lithuanian,” advises the film director.
He claims that he communicates with other Armenians in Lithuania, but most of the time these meetings take place on some occasion, for example when there are celebrations, rallies.
