Learning medicine becomes more interesting: a record number of people sacrifice the body for science after death

The body of a deceased person is being prepared for scientific research, which has been used by Lithuanian medical students from time to time, as a rare compatriot agreed to donate his body to medicine after death. The students then had to learn from textbooks or using pictures and drills.

Furthermore, according to Andrejus Suchomlinovas, associate professor in the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Anthropology of the Vilnius University School of Medicine, it is not enough.

“Any good book, any good atlas shows, as we say, the ideal anatomy of the body. And the body of a real man shows the structure of the body of a real man. And it is very important to demonstrate that all people are different. That is, when there are adjacent … it happens that there are two different bodies or three bodies next to each other on several tables. We see what a different human structure can be. How can the same artery branch differently in one place or another? ”Says Andrejus Suchomlinovas, associate professor at the VU Faculty of Medicine.

Such knowledge is especially necessary by potential surgeons. And for those for whom the encounter with the body of the deceased helps to decide if medicine is better for him or if it is better to choose other studies. After all, as the associate professor says, there have been cases where students passed out and left the medicine after such research.

Only the body was rarely donated to the university by people. Therefore, the representatives of the university call the message that compatriots are increasingly aware and more and more willing to sacrifice for science.

“Last year, you could say, it was our record when we got nine dead human bodies. Our donors There were around seventy declarations of will. It was also the highest number, because before we had ten or fifteen a year, “says A. Suchomlinov.

It is true that ten times more people donate their bodies for anatomy studies abroad than in Lithuania. The body can be donated to the university not only by a person who has decided to do so. The bodies of your loved ones can also be donated by your relatives: parents, children or a spouse. Until now, the bravest are the women, who most often decide to sacrifice the body for the science of anatomy. The average age of these women is sixty-seven years.

Vilma, who lives in Valkininkai, is just one of the people who wants to be investigated after her death list:

“Well, only certain things need to be known to die better in Lithuania. It can’t be suicide. Because then they don’t take that body anymore. Well, I think now, that coronavirus, too, really didn’t want to die now, because, well, if I really does not take coronavirus. “

The woman herself says that she has been thinking since adolescence about how her body can serve in the treatment of diseases, because she herself has been suffering from diabetes since childhood.

“When I was last in class, I wanted to stretch my height in Kaunas with hormones in every way. but I am not in height, but in width, and somehow that diabetes, and that appearance, and I was complex, and I was very sick, like all the girls, that I am here, both small and thick, I did not know exactly how they were going things there, but I thought if after death they not only buried me, but took doctors, scientists, examined how diabetes would be there, then perhaps others would not get so tired, “says Vilma Radavičienė, a future body donor .

Even if a person expresses the will to become a donor, family members do not always agree. Vilma explains that she has already warned her relatives that her will will have to be carried out. It is true that the relatives, as the woman says, do not agree with her will. So if her will is done when the time comes, the woman hesitates.

“It just came to our attention then. And you know what hurts the most? I want to talk about it, that those people who, when it’s very, very difficult for me, don’t really attract them, they live that way, but why What do your opinions crush? It hurts, it hurts alive, and after death I will be the same. Find out what you want. And now I know that we will cling to words, “said V. Radavičienė.

When the body is medically dislocated, as the university explains, it is cremated and buried. The university already has three ashes with ashes. The rest, depending on the will of the deceased, can be delivered to relatives to bury him. If there are no relatives or they are not taken away, the university will bury them. It is true that this is not easy to do so far.

The university is waiting for the columbarium promised by the Vilnius municipality in the Antakalnis cemetery. However, the municipality retaliates, it is almost impossible, the head of the city management and environmental protection department explains why.

“It is a closed cemetery and there is simply no place to form a new cemetery. And even they wanted, even in Bernardine’s cemetery. But there are opportunities as they are. We suggest where it could be installed without any problem, for example, in this case, in Karveliškės Cemetery or Liepynė Cemetery. It would be possible to do it without any problem ”, says the representative of the Gintautas Runovičius municipality.

Scientists don’t hide, they want a special place to bury people who deserve science. Therefore, the artists hill of Antakalnis Cemetery would be the most suitable. The urns are stored on the university premises until there is a suitable place to bury them. Scientists explain that it is better to incinerate and bury bodies in the columbarium rather than in the ground. After all, they are considered formal before the investigation. And they are poisonous things. The examination of the bodies takes from one to ten years.
