In order not to interfere with the ferry mooring during the season, the reconstruction of the pier is carried out in two stages. The dock is divided into roughly equal parts. The southern part is currently being repaired and work here should be finished by the fall of this year, probably in October.
If it weren’t for the sound of the pile forging, people waiting for the ferry in Smiltyne would not realize that repair work is underway.
When the southern part is repaired, that is, in autumn, the shuttle will moor to it, as it has ridges on which the shuttle can place its apparatus, and the other part will be worked on. The entire berth should be completed by June 2022.
The value of the works, which will last approximately a year and a half, is 1.9 million. EUR (VAT included). They are carried out by the Latvian companies SIA Baltijas Baltijas geologijas centrs and AB BMGS, which have won the competition from the Klaipėda State Port Authority and operate under a joint venture agreement.
After reinforcing the berth to more than 130 m, slopes, potholes, mooring posts and a new pavement will be installed. Currently, the depth at this pier is 3 meters, planned to deepen to 5.5 m. After the reconstruction of the dock, it will be possible to moor two boats of different parameters at the same time.
“This berth is already completely worn out in terms of rendering and safety. Also, as ferries increase, the loads to the dock need to be adequate. After rebuilding, we will have a beautiful and modern embankment,” said A. Latakas, who visited the construction site on Wednesday.
By the way, it was not easy to get to the construction site where Latvian companies work, even though the head of the Port Authority was with us. The builders said they are doing well so far, the work is on time. The ridges of the wall are being hammered and then concreted.
According to them, the work is complicated by the fact that the bottom is filled with stones of different sizes. By the way, builders find all kinds of waste here.
