Speaking to reporters, the prime minister said the state of emergency, which the government will declare on Tuesday, will give border guards more power to return migrants to Belarus.

The government has also decided to accelerate the installation of security infrastructure on Latvia’s eastern border with Russia and Belarus, reported K. Karinis.

Interior Minister Marija Golubeva previously proposed declaring a state of emergency on the border with Latvia to protect the borders of the country and the European Union from “illegal immigration weapons”.

In the past four days, the Latvian border guards have detained 218 illegal immigrants from Belarus. A total of 278 of those people, mostly Iraqis, have been arrested this year.
