“It is in the interest of the whole of Europe that this illegal migration path built by the Belarusian regime is dismantled. Lithuania is working hard, but the maximum efforts of the EU institutions are also needed in terms of the governments of the countries of origin of illegal immigrants, both in Africa and the Middle East, “said Foreign Minister G. Landsbergis.

The Minister emphasized to the EU foreign policy chief that the Lukashenko regime, which had long ignored human rights in his country and continued to destroy civil society in Belarus, had now gone even further: the use of illegal immigrants : families, women and children. .

“Lithuania is doing its ‘homework’: stopping, accommodating and preventing further movement of illegal immigrants, amending legislation, shortening asylum procedures, tightening its border controls and negotiating with Iraq and Turkey. We are preparing to return immigrants to their countries of origin, but at this stage an even greater involvement of the EU institutions is needed, “said the head of Lithuanian diplomacy.

Landsberg and Borrel also discussed Russia’s preparations for the Zapad-2021 military exercise in the EU neighborhood and its impact on the overall security situation in the region.
