“The second round will show who will form the Government. Although there is a bit of optimism, which is also expressed in public space, but we still have to come to the elections, we have to choose the leadership of Lithuania,” said G. Landsbergis to reporters gathered at the Seimas on Tuesday.
A few weeks ago, President Gitan Nauseda said that the debate over the US presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden reminded him of his fight with Ingrid Shimonyte.
Landsbergis said that despite such statements by the president, if the Conservatives formed a ruling coalition, there should be no friction with the presidency.
“It seems to me that the debates that took place before the presidential elections were probably the highest level we have had in the debate culture in Lithuania. Everyone remembers the eve of the elections as a particularly dignified discussion between two serious politicians and statesmen over Lithuania and the future of Lithuania. I think the discussion has a reason to continue in the future, “said the Conservative leader.
Landsberg assured that he had already spoken with the president after the first round of the elections.
“It just came to our notice then. I said ‘thank you’ for the greeting. The conversation was not political. So sincere, kind,” commented the president of TS-LKD.
Landsbergis does not overemphasize that his potential coalition partners, the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party, did not blaze vehemently in the public sphere to attack conservatives.
“It just came to our attention then. We are all still against the second round of the elections, we all have more or less candidates in the second round and everyone wants to talk about their parties, the pros. In fact, this is the correct tactic: speak for your party, for your candidates. <...> Now it is such a stage that any coalition coordination is a bit early and may even upset the voters, ”said G. Landsbergis.
According to him, the fundamental values between the Conservatives and the Freedom Party coincide: respect for human rights, freedom of expression, the western leadership of Lithuania.
“It just came to our knowledge then. But he and with Socdemais match. And the fact that different parties have different programs and different priorities in the state is a beautiful democracy, that they can choose what their priority is and vote for the party whose priorities correspond to them, ”said G. Landsbergis.
When asked about working with the Labor Party, the Conservative leader noted that he had not yet managed to assess the party’s core values.
Ramūnas Karbauskis has publicly said that he plans to work with TS-LKD if voters ranked the candidates in the Christian wing. According to G. Landsbergis, this is how the peasant leader tries to divide and blackmail the conservatives.
“I don’t take it very seriously,” said the TS-LKD president.
The second round of the Seimas elections will take place on October 25.
