G. Landsbergis claims that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia made such a proposal at the EU General Affairs Council on Monday.
In Monday’s Foreign Affairs Council, I raised the question of possible sanctions the EU could impose on detention. Clearly, we need to monitor the situation, because what we see today does not mean that tomorrow will be the same. We must be prepared to react to either side, we will see what the final decision of the “court” will be, the minister said on Monday.
According to Landsberg, the sanctions list could include those implicated in the opposition’s arrest and “trial” that will take place on Monday.
According to him, the Russian police forces are trying to arrest A. Navalna to extend his detention until 29 January.
“Obviously, the Russian police can only detain for 48 hours. As a result, there is such a rush and attempts are being made to hook another person to charge Mr. Navaln with his arrest until January 29. When is the actual court hearing scheduled, where new decisions will be made. “It is obvious that there is greater repression against the opposition leader in Moscow, and the EU must be ready to react strongly,” he said.
ELTA recalls that Navaln was arrested on Sunday at Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow.
The Kremlin critic Navaln was arrested shortly after landing after he passed passport control. He flew in from Germany, where he has been treated for poisoning since August. Initially, the plane with the opposition was supposed to land at Vnukov Airport, where his supporters and the media gathered, but at the last minute it was directed to a larger international airport in the Russian capital.
Navaln’s lawyer, Olga Michailova, told Echo of the Moscow radio station that she was not allowed to see her client, who is being held at a police station near the airport.
A trial of A. Navaln is currently underway at the Khimki Police Station, where preventive measures are being considered.
A. Navalnas himself described the judicial hearing held at the police station as a mockery of the application of the law and an illegality at the highest level.
