Landsberg: Lukashenko must be deprived of the opportunity to attract new refugees

“The situation is tense and tends to get worse. The objective of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is clear: economic immigrants who have crossed the EU border illegally must be returned to the place where they left, ”says G. Landsbergis in a comment sent by his representative Vytautė Šmaižytė to BNS.

“At the same time, Mr Lukashenko must be deprived of the opportunity to fool new fugitives into believing that it will be easy to enter the EU. It may be possible to reach the border with the help of the regime, but there are no opportunities to travel further, ”says the foreign minister.

Last day, border guards detained 150 illegal immigrants, the most illegal immigrants detained per day, nearly three times the previous record.

With the recent sharp increase in the number of illegal immigrants, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus.

The Foreign Minister notes that he has raised the issue of illegal migration at the recent Council on Foreign Relations, as well as in bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Greece, Iraq, Turkey and other countries. A visit to Iraq and Turkey is planned in the near future.

In recent weeks, Lithuania has been receiving more illegal immigrants from Belarus, who are believed to be assisted to reach the border by services from the neighboring country. This influx is seen as a revenge by the authoritarian Belarusian President Lukashenko for Lithuania’s efforts to exert more European pressure on human rights abuses by the Minsk regime.
