“Perhaps this is not the person I would first associate with innovation,” Landsberg said.
According to the politician, “there was an opportunity to stop the storms on the government glass and wait until the end of the period, there was not much time left.”
“It seems to me that somehow that boat is rocking. There are big problems with the economic rescue plan: leaving the crown behind. On the other hand, if the Minister was insisted, I think that the Vice Minister Marius Skuodis has shown that there are innovative and modern people who can determine the direction of the Lithuanian economy. I think they would be suitable to work in more than one government. There are also lower-level agency heads who could also fill those positions, ”said G. Landsbergis.
Karbauskis: the solution is logical
Ramūnas Karbauskis, president of the Lithuanian Green Peasants Union, says that R. Sinkevičius’ candidacy is the election of the Prime Minister.
“Since he is the chairman of the Economic Committee, it is a certain logic,” said R. Karbauskis.
The Prime Minister explained the decision
Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis says he nominated deputy Rimantas Sinkevičius as economy minister, after evaluating his position at Seimas and his previous experience.
“Shortly before the end of the term, the president of the Economic Committee (Seimas) would probably be the most suitable for this position,” the prime minister told journalists in the House of Lords on Monday.
On Monday, S. Skvernelis presented R. Sinkevičius’s candidacy for the post of Minister of Economy and Innovation to President Gitan Nausėda.
According to the prime minister, this candidate “has the skills, competencies, political and ministerial experience.”
According to S. Skvernel, the new minister will have to deal with “economic recovery and transformation to a new stage”, eliminating the consequences of the coronavirus crisis.
R. Sinkevičius, 68, is the elder of the Social Democratic Labor Group and the chairman of the Seimas Economic Committee. From 2012 to 2016, he served as Minister of Transportation.
Under the Constitution, ministers are appointed and removed by the president on the recommendation of the prime minister.
The post of Minister for the Economy and Innovation has been vacant since December last year, when former Minister Virginijus Sinkevičius took over as European Commissioner for the Environment.
In February, President G. Nausėda rejected the advisor’s nomination to Prime Minister Lukas Savickas for the Minister of Economy.
