The minister stressed the importance of coordinating the actions of the countries of the region, the European Union (EU) and the United States to curb repression and human rights violations in Russia, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“We need not only to talk about the human rights situation in Russia, but also to agree on concrete support for the Russian people,” Landsberg said.
He also reported that Lithuania was considering the possibility of imposing national sanctions on Russian officials responsible for the imprisonment of opponent Alexei Navaln, if no new sanctions were introduced at the EU level.
The minister, as a US senator, also discussed global challenges, China’s role in the region and emphasized that Lithuania will seek cooperation with the United States on the China issue. Mr. Landsbergis reported on Lithuania’s intention to develop closer trade and economic cooperation with Taiwan.
