After a major renovation, when the face of the Laisv changeds alley changed, the city’s main fountain became its brightest symbol again. Kaunas city residents and guests will soon notice the innovations introduced in it, according to the Kaunas City Municipality press release.
The revamped accent of the longest pedestrian street will not only dance, play, surprise the light show, music and water currents, but will also have a unique smoke technology, not yet used in Lithuania, that will complement the songs chosen by the Kaunas residents with exceptional effect. It’s not just designed to make an impression: On hot summer days, this mist will refresh passersby, and sometimes those around you will even be able to smell your scents.
According to Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the Kaunas Municipality City Administration Department, in 2018 preparations were made only for cosmetic repairs, but when work began, it became clear that the support structures were living in their last days. Then it was decided to do a major overhaul. The entire technical room below it was dismantled and reinforced. The Laisv Alley Fountain has been decorating this picturesque Kaunas space since 1982.
Impressive technical parameters
The company, which has installed the recently renovated fountain, claims that it stands out from others in Lithuania and can currently be considered one of the most modern. Your system is fully computerized and all operating processes are remotely monitored and controlled.
The fountain has been rebuilt preserving the old architecture and its characteristic decorative elements, but renovating the finish and installing new automated technological equipment. The old “bubbles” became new. They continue to nostalgically decorate the fountain. Equipped with new LED lighting: three dozen special multi-colored stainless steel luminaires. The lights come on automatically at dusk or when you order a piece of music.
A sound system is installed around it. The interactive source will receive short SMS messages and play music according to the wishes of the visitors. This service should be activated in mid-May. At the moment, it will operate in the usual classic mode most of the time, and at the beginning of each hour it will “film” music, lights and performances in the water.
So far, he has programmed 3 legendary tracks: the hit band Antis “Oils”, the Rolling Stones – “I can’t get any satisfaction” and the Queen – “Someone to love”. In the next month, the playlist should be significantly supplemented with new songs, as the number of songs can be unlimited.
The new nozzles can raise the water “column” to a height of 9 meters and can “shut off” the stream up to 12 times per second in different modes. If all the fountain pumps were operating at full capacity, they would spray more than 600 m³ of water per hour.

Meetings “at the source” will return
The Laisv Alley Fountain, which erupted on Thursday night, immediately attracted the attention of curious Kaunas residents. There is no doubt that in the long run this space will return to its glorious past and it is here that Kaunas residents will assign a place for romantic dates.
As soon as the quarantine is over, it will be possible to invite friends and other parties “to the source” again. From now on, it will not only be a meeting point, but also a leisure pastime.
This week, Kaunas residents will be greeted by the rebuilt Unity Plaza. Visitors will also be fascinated by the new and modern fountain that springs from the pavement.
“At the end of the extended quarantine period, these fountains will be a real refreshment for Kaunas residents and guests. Although it took a while, there is no doubt that the fountains in Laisv alley and Vienyb square will become true centers of attraction and decoration of the city ”, said the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
In different places
Although most Kaunas residents are well acquainted with the city’s main sources, many of them can be found in districts located far from the city center. In the Dainava, Draugystė and Kalniečiai parks, which have not been renovated for a long time, the fountains surprise and attract visitors with their colors and shapes.
This year, the famous Kaukas stairwell fountain also received innovations. Incidentally, it is the oldest in the city, because it began to sprout in 1926. And although a frequent resident of Kaunas could name 5 to 6 sources of the city, in Kaunas there are almost two dozen of them and special sources of drinking water :
